Ammo truck explodes near Poltava, road to Kyiv blocked

Ammunition scattered in an explosion has blocked traffic on the Kharkiv-Kyiv road near Poltava, parliament deputy Ihor Mosiychuk (Radical Party faction) has reported.

"I am trying to get back to the capital city. Explosives are scattered on the Kharkiv-Kyiv road near Poltava. The road is blocked... A truck carrying ammunition to the eastern front caught fire during the night. Glass trembled in the windows of Poltava homes amid explosions of ammunition with various calibers," the deputy wrote on Facebook on Wednesday morning.

The fire has been extinguished by now, but some damaged shells are still scattered on the road. Bomb squad technicians are at work.

Yuriy Sulayev, a representative of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry department in Poltava region, confirmed information about the incident in a later period.

"Reportedly, a shell detonated on a truck. The truck caught fire, and other shells detonated from the flames," he said in a program aired by the channel 112.Ukraine.

Road police blocked the traffic, and forensic experts started working on site by 3 a.m. after the explosions had stopped and the fire had been put out, he said.

A criminal case was opened on the counts of 'negligent handling of ammunition', Sulayev said.

The emergency situation did not hurt anyone but the fire damaged a KrAZ truck transporting ammunition, the representative of the Interior Ministry said.
