Ukraine's foreign ministry supports extension of EU sanctions against Russia

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry supports the decision by the Council of the European Union to extend until January 31, 2016, sanctions against Russia over its direct involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This decision has once again demonstrated the solidarity of the European Union with our state, its commitments to the protection of the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine," the statement said.

The ministry notes that the entire civilized world and the EU in particular urge the Russian Federation to adhere to the commitments in the framework of the Minsk peace agreements to cease the supply of weapons, mercenaries and ammunition, contribute to the truce and influence Russian-controlled militants. Only the full implementation by Russia of all its commitments can be a condition for the revision of the sanction regime.

The Ukrainian side believes that in case of further escalation of the situation or continuous neglect by Moscow of international laws and its obligations, the international community should step up the sanctions and increase other pressure on the Russian Federation.

"The Minsk agreements will be considered implemented only when Ukraine retakes the full control of the Ukrainian-Russian border, the situation in Donbas becomes stable, and it returns under Ukrainian jurisdiction. This is the common stand of Ukraine, the European Union and the whole civilized world," the ministry said.
