Dnipro-1 battalion blocks Akhmetov foundation's aid for Donetsk

Twenty-two trucks containing humanitarian aid from the foundation of Rinat Akhmetov are still stuck at a checkpoint not far from Kurakhove, with fighters from the Dnipro-1 volunteers battalion unwilling to let them into Donetsk, the foundation's aid coordinator Rymma Fil told reporters.

On Monday morning representatives from Akhmetov's foundation delivered the required documentation to the checkpoint as requested by the Dnipro-1 battalion, she said. This happened after around 1000 a.m., following which the fighters asked to wait for a while, but the trucks are still there, Fil said.

"Attempts to politicize the humanitarian aid when people have been without social payouts and pensions for four months now is odd, to say the least," she said.

Akhmetov's foundations works absolutely transparently and has asked international organizations to set up a monitoring group to track down aid deliveries and distribution, she said.

The foundation sends its aid via Dnipropetrovsk and Mariupol to Donetsk and, once in Donetsk, this aid is distributed by volunteers to the needy on Donbas Arena, Fil said.

The aid is provided to pensioners aged over 60, the disabled and young children aged under 2, she said.

Akhmetov's foundation wrote to Ukrainian leaders, asking them to step in and let the aid convoy in, but there has been no reaction yet, Fil said.
