Seven Ukraine policemen hurt in clashes with protesters - police

Seven policemen were hospitalized with injuries and teargas poisoning after clashes with anti-government protesters outside the headquarters of the Vinnytsia regional administration on Saturday, the regional police authority said.

"During an off-schedule session of the regional council today, some of the aggressive protesters grossly violated public order. Seven of the Vinnytsia police officers who were on duty maintaining public order were hospitalized with injuries and gas poisoning," the authority said in a statement.

About 600 people gathered near the building on Saturday morning and began to storm it, the statement said. Media reports claimed they had been rebelling against the dismissal of one of the council members and the behavior of regional police and demanding being let into Saturday's council session.

"Eggs, stones and firecrackers flew" at about 200 police who were defending the building, and "the activists used teargas as well," the police authority said.

One of the protesters sought medical assistance.

The activists smashed some of the windows in the administration headquarters, and hurled eggs at an office building opposite.

Four protesters were arrested and taken to a police station but were released after being identified and giving evidence, the authority said.
