Brussels sees growing concern about lack of progress in Tymoshenko case, MEP Kowal says

The political circles in Brussels are disappointed at the lack of progress in resolving the situation with former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and are concerned that the Association Agreement will not be signed for this reason, Head of the European Parliament's Delegation of the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, MEP Pawel Kowal, has said.

"After Brussels announced its strong support for Ukraine in the trade war with Russia, but did not see in response any progress in resolving the situation with Tymoshenko, the disappointment at the Ukrainian position is growing in this regard. The longer the Ukrainian authorities delay the settlement of the situation with Tymoshenko, the fewer hopes remain in the EU that the agreement will be signed. There is a feeling that Kyiv is ready to risk the signing only to leave the situation with Tymoshenko unchanged," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine in Brussels on Tuesday, while commenting on recent sentiments in the political circles in Brussels.

He said that the situation with Tymoshenko was influencing the positions of some EU members.

"At the latest the decision should be taken at 0600 on October 21 [the date of a meeting of the EU Council at which the EU is expected to decide on the signing of the Association Agreement]. If this does not happen, the decision will not be taken. The date of November 19, for which the Ukrainian side possibly relies, may not save the situation – it'll be too late," he said.
