Underwater sewage pipes below Dnipro in normal state, says Popov
The underwater pipes (drain siphons) under the river Dnipro for pumping sewage from the right bank of Kyiv to the Bortnychi aeration plant are in a normal state, but it is necessary to build a duplicate network, since they have been in operation for a long time, Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov has reported.
"We were worried about the state of the pipes. Yesterday we started to examine them, and I know the result as of this morning: there are no reasons for worry, they are in a working regime that conforms to the norms," he said during the visiting conference on Wednesday.
He said that in 2012 it was decided to build new pipes.
"It's good that these facilities are being well exploited, but we definitely should resolve the issue of building new pipelines, and last year I issued an order on building new branches to replace the old ones. Last year we held a tender and this year we must ensure its financing. It's nearly UAH 8-10 million. Taking into consideration present situation, I'll do everything to find at minimum 50% of the funds needed to start financing this project," Popov said.
A total of seven pipes of a diameter of 1.4 meters are built on the bottom of the Dnipro to pump sewage. If the sand below the pipes is washed out, the unsupported dpipes could burst. As a result sewage would flow into the Dnipro.
Divers examine the pipes twice a year to ensure they are in the proper condition.
