Fico plans to meet with Zelenskyy in coming days

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the coming days, and the parties are working on choosing a suitable date.

"We are looking for another date, which should take place in the next few days," Fico said, commenting on Zelenskyy's invitation to arrive in Kiyiv on Friday, iRozhlas reports.

As reported, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to a meeting near the state borders between Slovakia and Ukraine. The Vice-President announced his invitation during a video address to Zelenskyy posted on the Facebook page of Fico.

Zelenskyy, in turn, invited Fico to arrive in Kyiv on Friday.

The five-year agreement on the transit of Russian gas between Ukraine and Russia ended on January 1, 2025. Since seven o'clock in the morning, gas transportation from the Sudzha entry point on the eastern border to the western and southern exit points has been stopped.

Earlier, Fico also threatened to veto a future package of military assistance to Ukraine from European allies. According to him, this is a response to the termination of the transit of Russian gas from Ukraine.

Earlier, the Slovak Prime minister stated that Bratislava could stop supplying electricity to Ukraine if Kyiv didn’t not agree to resume transit of Russian gas through its territory. Also last week, Fico called Zelenskyy a "beggar and a blackmailer."

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has said he refuses to pay an official visit to Kyiv because Ukraine has stopped the transit of Russian gas.

On Sunday, January 12, a group of pro-Russian members of the Slovak parliament went on a visit to Moscow to meet with State Duma deputies and other representatives of the Russian government.
