Zelenskyy: Ukraine to deliver additional 5,000 tonnes of corn to Malawi in coming weeks
Ukraine delivered 14,500 tonnes of corn to Malawi as part of the "Grain from Ukraine" program, with an additional 5,000 tonnes expected in the coming weeks, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"Ukraine has delivered 14,500 tonnes of corn to Malawi as part of the humanitarian program "Grain From Ukraine." Almost 5 thousand tons more will be delivered in the coming weeks. I am grateful to the UN World Food Programme and partners for supporting this effort," he wrote on X on Tuesday evening.
Zelenskyy highlighted that Malawi is facing a devastating drought this year, severely impacting local maize production and creating a major food shortage. In response, Ukraine decided to support Malawi’s people and government.
"This delivery of Ukrainian corn will help to stabilize the situation and provide for the monthly needs of over 1.5 million Malawians. Ukraine remains committed to its role as a global food security guarantor, even as it defends itself against Russia's full-scale invasion and attacks on our ports and agricultural infrastructure," Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized that Ukraine aims not only to provide food in difficult times but also to share knowledge and technology with African partners to enhance self-sufficiency in agriculture.
The third Food Security Summit in Kyiv will focus on this goal, with Ukraine expecting broad participation from African states and other partners, the head of state said.
"We rely on a broad representation of African states and other partners at this important event. We can overcome the consequences of Russian aggression against Ukraine by standing together and upholding the principles of the UN Charter," Zelenskyy said.
