A meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council at the level of heads of state, including Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, has begun in Astana (Kazakhstan).

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that the Ukrainian president is in Kazakhstan on May 28-29 at the invitation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev and that the purpose of the visit is a meeting between the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, as well as Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan, which will take place as part of a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council at the level of heads of state.

The participants in the meeting are expected to exchange views on possible formats of Ukraine's cooperation with the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, as well as discuss national and transnational projects as part of such cooperation.

The agenda of the meeting also includes the adoption of a strategy for a joint agricultural policy of the three member states of the council, the creation of an integrated information system of trade of the Customs Union, and the expansion of cooperation.

While welcoming the participants in the meeting, Nazarbayev said that in December 2012 agreement was reached on more frequent contacts.

"This year [we will meet] three times to keep up the pace of the adoption of documents on the integration and creation of a Eurasian economic union," he said, adding that the first high-level meeting is held today as part of the agreements reached by the sides.

"The main thing is our common desire to integrate further," Nazarbayev said, expressing confidence that the integration process should "go on evolutionarily."

"We need to unite our efforts, seek common ground, and do it gradually," he said.
