During war, for some period after end of war, Ministry of Veterans should exist – Shmyhal

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal believes that the Ministry of Veterans Affairs should exist during the war and for some period after its completion.

"The issue of the existence of the Ministry of Veterans should be discussed among veterans, it was an initiative of veterans – the existence of such a ministry... In my understanding, for the period of the war and the end of the war, the Ministry of Veterans should exist. In addition to symbolism and priority, this is an important point that our country will need in moment of demobilization," Shmyhal said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday, answering the question of whether there are plans to reorganize the Ministry of Veterans, distributing functions between the Ministry of Social Policy and the Ministry of Defense.

He said such a ministry is also needed for some period after the war.

"Whether this should be a separate ministry or whether it should be a powerful part of social policy is a discussion that needs to be held more broadly with society," Shmyhal said.

The Prime Minister said the discussion is ongoing, but it should be completed this year.

At the same time, the prime minister said there are questions about the effectiveness of such a ministry, and work is now underway on this.
