Some 57% of Ukrainians consider most important factor for success in war against Russia to be adequate support from the West – KIIS

The majority of respondents (57%) believe that the most important factor for Ukraine's success in the war against the Russian Federation is adequate support from Western countries with weapons, sanctions and financial assistance, as evidenced by data from a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) from February 17 through February 23, 2024.

"The majority of Ukrainians – 57% – believe that the most important factor for success is proper support from the West with weapons, finances, sanctions... Among respondents who list proper support from the West as the most important factor (if taken as 100%), 42% feel that "the West is getting tired of Ukraine and its support is weakening; the West wants to put pressure on Ukraine to make concessions to Russia," KIIS said in a press release published on its website on Thursday.

According to the survey, 33% of Ukrainians also consider the higher efficiency and transparency of the Ukrainian authorities to be important factors in the war against the Russian aggressor, 32% – the absence of conflict between the political leadership and the military command, 26% – cooperation between the authorities and civil society.

"About 16-21% of respondents believe that Ukraine should be helped by cooperation between the authorities and the opposition and the creation of a broad coalition of patriotic forces, a decrease in support for Russia by its allies and a higher efficiency of the Ukrainian military command," KIIS said.

Also, the survey results indicate that only 8% of Ukrainians believe that the Russian opposition will be able to help Ukraine due to the deterioration of the situation in the Russian Federation, 7% expressed their readiness to delegate emergency powers and the ability to violate laws to the military-political leadership to quickly make the necessary decisions.

During February 17-23, 2024, the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own national public opinion poll "Omnibus" using a method of computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI). The sample is 1052 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except Crimea). The survey was conducted with adult (aged 18 years and older) citizens of Ukraine who, at the time of the survey, were living on the territory of Ukraine (within the limits controlled by the Ukrainian authorities until February 24, 2022). The sample did not include residents of territories that are temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities, and the survey was not conducted with citizens who traveled abroad after February 24, 2022.

Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 3.4% for indicators close to 50%, 3.0% for indicators close to 25%, 2.1% for indicators close to 10%, 1.5% for indicators close to 5%. In war conditions, in addition to the specified formal error, a certain systematic deviation is added.
