Work has begun in Ukraine to create a methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions caused by military actions, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reported.

"Today, Ukraine is the first in the world to develop a methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from military operations seeking to bring the aggressor to justice. I hope that in the future this document will be recognized at the international level," said Minister Ruslan Strilets, whose words are quoted in the release on Friday.

The Ministry of Natural Resources said that it will work on the document together with representatives of the Office of the Prosecutor General, the State Environmental Inspectorate, the National Center for Accounting for Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Lead Author of the Initiative on GHG accounting of war, Dutch expert Lennard de Klerk.

"In the near future, a working group will be created that will develop a methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions caused by military actions. The plan is to present a draft of this methodology on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference in June 2024 in Bonn, Germany, to attract the attention of the world community to current issues and the consequences of war on the climate and environment," the ministry said.

The ministry said that as a result of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, today additional greenhouse gas emissions in the world amount to more than 150 million tonnes of CO2, and just a year ago they amounted to 97 million tonnes of CO2. This environmental damage is estimated at more than $11 billion.
