Tusk: When one of European leaders doesn’t want to see Ukraine in NATO, it weakens security of his own state

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes that the position of individual European leaders who do not want to see Ukraine in NATO weakens the security of their own states.

"No one doubts, neither in Poland, nor in Europe, nor in NATO, that today the Ukrainian army is one of the most prepared in the world for armed operations, unfortunately. Because the war forced such a change," Tusk said during a joint conversation together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Ukrainian students.

At the same time, he noted that the key problem now is not the assessment of the Ukrainian army.

"We, Poles, understand well what Russian aggression is and what a challenge it is ... Every normal politician would like to have the Ukrainian army in the organization that is responsible for the security of his state - in NATO. And NATO would, of course, be much stronger if Ukraine became a member of the Alliance. And, by the way, the Polish government convinces all skeptics that this is in the interests of every NATO member and that it is necessary for Ukraine to become a NATO member as soon as possible," the Prime Minister said.

According to Tusk, "the Poles themselves do not need to be convinced of this, because we in Poland know well that Poland's security depends directly on how Russia's war against Ukraine ends."

"Of course, many people in Poland are thinking about what the consequences of Ukraine joining the EU and NATO will be. There are some common interests, sometimes there is an objective conflict of interests. You have heard how transport companies have blocked border crossings. There was a grain problem because Polish farmers were afraid of competition, but we are trying to solve this kind of problem," he said.

If, as the Polish Prime Minister noted, we are talking about fundamental issues related to the security of Ukraine, Poland, Europe and the entire free world, NATO, then it is in the interests of this world for Ukraine to join NATO.

"This is an obvious way to increase the security of the entire free world. And I hope that this truth will affect everyone without exception," Tusk added.

"If you are a member of NATO, and I am trying to explain this to a European prime minister who said a few days ago that he did not want Ukraine to become a member of NATO. Someone who is the prime minister of a European state and does not want Ukraine to join NATO, in my opinion, this weakens the security of their own state. And it should be understood by everyone. I want a safe Poland, Hungary, Germany, France, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Romania. And so, it is in their interests for Ukraine to be in NATO," he concluded.
