UNESCO mission to visit Odesa in coming days to estimate damage caused to cultural heritage – Culture Ministry

A mission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will arrive in Odesa to make a preliminary evaluation of the damage caused to the cultural heritage facilities as a result of Russia's attack on Sunday night, the Culture and Informational Policy Ministry of Ukraine has said.

"The Organization stressed that intentional attacks on cultural facilities as well as destruction and damaging them can amount to a war crime. However, Russia is still a member of UNESCO," it said on Facebook on Monday.

The ministry emphasized that it expects active actions to preserve and restore the Ukrainian cultural heritage, and also calls for the expulsion of Russia from UNESCO.

As reported, on the night of July 23, Russia attacked Odesa region using five types of missiles – Kalibr, Onyx, Kh-22 and two modifications of Iskander ballistic missiles – a significant number of them were shot down. One person was killed and 21 people, including four children, suffered injuries as a result of the attack.

The Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed and buildings in the historical center of Odesa were damaged. According to preliminary information, 25 architectural monuments were damaged, Head of Odesa Regional Military Administration Oleh Kiper said.
