MFA: any strike by Russia on civilian infrastructure to be direct violation of ECHR prescriptions

Since on March 1 the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision in which it ordered the Russian Federation to stop attacks and bombardments of civilian targets in Ukraine, now any strike by the Russian Federation on civilian infrastructure will be a direct violation of the prescriptions of the ECHR, which will greatly facilitate the bringing of violations and the recovery of compensation after the victory of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has reported.

"The Ukrainian side does not hope that Russia will comply with these requirements. At the same time, now any strike on civilian infrastructure will be a direct violation of the ECHR prescriptions, and this will greatly facilitate bringing violations and collecting compensation after Ukraine's victory," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said on the website on Wednesday.

For the first time in a situation of war between two states parties to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Court of Human Rights, in its decision on Russia, pointed to measures to ensure only by one of the parties.

"In the decision, the court said that it is closely monitoring Russia's military aggression against Ukraine. The court not only banned Russia from using weapons against civilian targets, but fully reproduced Ukraine's main demand in its statement," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
