European Parliament President Roberta Metsola says the European Parliament will support the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court to prosecute Russian President Vladimir Putin and so-called Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for war crimes in Ukraine.

She made such a statement on Tuesday in Brussels as part of an extraordinary meeting of the European Parliament, convened because of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Metsola said the message from Europe is clear: it will rise. Europe will not look away as those fighting for our values in the streets face Putin's massive war machine. Europe will support the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and the investigation of war crimes in Ukraine. Europe will hold him accountable, just like Lukashenko.

Metsola said that currently people are facing an existential threat to the Europe, the Europe for which so many people have given so much.
