U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations upholds Crimea resolution

The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has recommended the adoption of a resolution condemning the illegal annexation of Ukraine's Crimea by Russia.

"The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has approved and recommended for approval by the upper chamber of the United States Congress of a resolution condemning illegal attempts by the Russian Federation to occupy Crimea," the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States said on Facebook.

It is noted that the document confirms the position of the Senate that Crimea is part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine. It is emphasized that the U.S. policy should lie in countering attempts to change the status, demographic map or political nature of Crimea.

"The resolution condemns the violation of human rights in Crimea and underlines that Russia is liable for such crimes during the Russian occupation of the peninsula," the message reads.

At the same time, the Ukrainian embassy informed that the senators are calling on the U.S. government to continue applying powers in terms of sanctions against the Russian Federation, imposed, in particular, according to the "Law Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" of 2017, and welcome further efforts by the American side to encourage the EU to impose additional sanctions related to Crimea.
