EU says Ukraine has the right to protect its territory

The European Union, commenting on the special operation of the Security Service for staging the murder of journalist Arkady Babchenko, has said that Ukraine has the right to protect its national interest and media, the Ukrainian news outlet Ukrayinska Pravda has reported.

As you know, Ukraine is placed in a very special situation regarding its security, given the situation in Crimea and the conflict in the east of the country. In this context, like all countries, Ukraine has the right to protect its national interest and its territory, the media quoted Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Maja Kocijancic, who answered journalists' questions at a briefing in Brussels.

She said that now the EU maintains contact with its Ukrainian friends and is trying to get more details on this matter.

Kocijancic also stressed that the EU mission in Ukraine knew nothing about the operation of the Security Service.

Yes, we have a mission in Ukraine, and it works with the Ukrainian authorities and the civil security sector ... But the operation you mentioned was an operation of the Ukrainian Security Service. Our mission did not take part in it, she said.

She separately stressed that the EU is happy that the life of journalist Arkady Babchenko was saved. We are happy that he is alive, the representative said.
