Interior Ministry initiates reform to tighten accountability for violation of traffic rules

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has emphasized the need to reform the traffic rules in Ukraine to strengthen safety on the roads, the press service of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry has reported.

The minister expressed confidence that road traffic death rate would significantly shrink in a year due to speed limits, video surveillance and other measures on tightening accountability for traffic violations.

"As a driver, I want to travel without a lot of restrictions, but the facts are a stubborn thing. If there are 80% of the dead between 60 km/h and 50 km/h, then I have no doubt. It's necessary to set the 50 km/h speed limit," Avakov said on Saturday, November 11, while commenting on the need to limit speed in populated localities.

"Four times as many people were killed on the roads than in the ATO [Anti-Terrorist Operation]. This is nonsense," he said.

He expressed confidence that the time had come to pay full attention to the issue of road safety, which largely depends on road quality.

"The quality of roads also matters. I mean the quality of road surface, marking, regulation. This is a separate direction for development, and there is a special program of the Infrastructure Ministry," Avakov said.

The minister also added that the changes should occur not only in this direction, or in the National Police, but in the entire Ukrainian society.
