Poroshenko, Tillerson discuss implementation of agreements between Ukraine, U.S. over phone

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, during which the parties discussed the implementation of the agreements reached between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States during the meeting in New York, the press service of the Ukrainian president said.

"Poroshenko thanked for supporting Ukraine during the ongoing Russian aggression. The parties coordinated further steps towards the deployment of an international UN mission in the occupied part of Donbas, including the uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border," the presidential website reads.

The president noted the importance of sanctions against Russia and stressed the U.S. leadership in this. He added that only in this way the aggressor could be forced to return to the international law, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

Poroshenko and Tillerson paid special attention to the release of hostages illegally detained in the occupied territory and in Russian prisons. The two also noted the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States.

The progress of Ukraine on the way of reforms was discussed as well. In particular, the importance of medical, educational, pension and anti-corruption reform was highlighted.

Tillerson informed the president about the appointment of Wess Mitchell as Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia and his plans to visit Ukraine in November to meet with the Ukrainian authorities.
