Ukrainian, Canadian defense ministries to sign agreement on cooperation

Defense Ministries of Ukraine and Canada are ready to sign a cooperation agreement, which lays the basis for further in-depth cooperation in various spheres of defense, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze has said.

According to the press service of the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said during the meeting with the Ukrainian delegation headed by Klympush-Tsintsadze that work on the cooperation agreement between the Defense Ministries of Ukraine and Canada has been completed and further the two countries' defense ministers will seek the earliest opportunity to sign this document.

"This is a basic document, which lays the foundation for the further deepening of cooperation in various spheres of defense, starting with training missions and ending with military doctrine and documents of a strategic nature," the report says.

During the meeting the parties also discussed the extension of the Canadian training mission Unifire. This is the project, under which Ukrainian soldiers and officers are being trained by 200 Canadian military at the Yavoriv training ground and in Kamenets-Podilsky training center. Klympush-Tsintsadze expressed gratitude for the Canadian support and cooperation.

"Canadian side assured that now it is working out the best format to continue the mission after March 31, noting that the new format should best meet the urgent needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the source reported.

Sajjan assured that Canada supports Ukraine in its efforts to reforms, particularly noting the reform of the police.

"I was extremely impressed by the police reform during a visit to Ukraine. Particularly impressive was the positive reaction of people," Canadian Defense Minister said.
