Ukraine probing ways of terminating PACE president's tenure

First Deputy Speaker of Ukraine's parliament and member of Ukraine's delegation to PACE Iryna Gerashchenko claims Ukraine's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is preparing to challenge the credentials of PACE President Pedro Agramunt, online portal Evropeiska Pravda reported on Tuesday.

Gerashchenko says Agramunt recently made public statements that fully coincide with the Russian position, including the cancellation of political sanctions introduced by the Assembly against the Russian delegation.

"We are concerned that a politician delegated by the European People's Party to this post deviates from the EPP's views and PACE principles. We must take this into account and have started consultations with colleagues in the [EPP's political] group. We have touched on this issue not only with the EPP's political group at PACE, but also with the leaders of the European People's Party, who are disturbed by Agramunt's position," Gerashchenko said.

The Ukrainian delegation has not started the procedure to call back the PACE president yet, but is making preparations.

"Now we are looking into the regulations together to officially raise the issue at the Assembly. Agramunt doesn't care about his reputation. He is concerned about his post. We'll target this weak spot of his," she said.

Evropeiska Pravda writes that it will be possible to launch the procedure for the change of the PACE president only in January, when a new session will open and PACE heads' credentials will be endorsed.

PACE elects a new president for two years, Agramunt's tenure began in 2016.

Should the Ukrainian delegation secure considerable support from parliamentarians from other countries, his tenure might be terminated in 2017.
