Biden promises Poroshenko: U.S. to grant $1 bln loan guarantees to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden have agreed to sign a bilateral agreement under which the U.S. would extend the third tranche of loan guarantees worth $1 billion to Ukraine, the Ukrainian presidential press service reports.

Poroshenko and Biden "agreed to sign a bilateral agreement in the near future on granting Ukraine the third tranche of loan guarantees worth $1 billion," the presidential press service said, in commenting on a telephone conversation between Poroshenko and Biden.

Poroshenko also informed Biden of the steps that Ukraine is taking to improve its national financial system and business climate. He said that he hoped the results of reforms would prompt the U.S., the IMF, and other international partners to intensify their support for Ukraine.

Biden welcomed Yuriy Lutsenko's appointment as Ukrainian prosecutor general, it said.

Biden also reaffirmed the U.S.' willingness to support Ukraine in reforming the prosecution system, and in fighting corruption. He mentioned the importance of legislative amendments as concerns the establishment of an inspectorate general within the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office.
