President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has expressed regret that his words that treat the article posted by New York Times about the corruption in Ukraine were misinterpreted and agreed that the country should do more to overcome corruption.

"Too bad, that my words on the publication in the honorable New York Times were misinterpreted. I read this publishing house myself, and I do respect the stance of its editorial," Poroshenko wrote on his official Facebook account on Sunday evening in Ukrainian and English languages.

Poroshenko said much more should be done to combat corruption in the country, though the first steps have already been made.

"I would emphasize that I have defended, and I continue to keep defend, Ukraine in all places and at all times," he said.
