Lavrov, Kerry discuss steps to consolidate ceasefire in Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by telephone to United States Secretary of State John Kerry at U.S. initiative, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website on Friday.

"Following their talks in Moscow on March 24, the Minister and the Secretary of State exchanged views on the issue of the Syrian conflict resolution. They continued to discuss specific steps to help reinforce the ceasefire in this country, broaden humanitarian access and efficient countering of terrorism, in which the U.S.-Russian military interaction plays a key role," the ministry said.

"Both sides reaffirmed their intention to continue to support the talks held under the UN aegis, involving the Syrian government and the entire spectrum of the opposition, during which the Syrian themselves must decide the future structure of their state," the ministry said.

"Lavrov pointed out once again that the Turkish-Syrian border remains 'holey' and that our data suggest that it is being actively used to send militants through Turkey to Syria. The parties pointed to the need for its closure, which requires swift agreement upon necessary measures, including through the UN Security Council," the ministry said.

The pair also discussed a number of other international problems, including the implementation of the Minsk agreements aimed at resolving the Ukrainian crisis, as well as pressing bilateral issues, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
