Ukrainian govt, EC sign agreement on Ukraine joining EU's Creative Europe program

The Ukrainian government and the European Commission (EC) have signed an agreement on Ukraine joining the EU's Creative Europe program with approximate EU financing of the project totaling EUR 1.46 billion.

"Ukraine is joining the EU's Creative Europe program. We were moving to the goal and did our best to do this. With the help of our European partners we've reached the result," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture of Ukraine Viacheslav Kyrylenko, who signed the document on behalf of the Ukrainian government, said.

European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Tibor Navracsics signed the document on behalf of the EU.

Creative Europe is the European Commission's framework program for support of the cultural and audiovisual sectors.

The program consists of two sub-programs: the Culture sub-program to promote culture, and the MEDIA sub-program to support the audiovisual sector.

Creative Europe's stated aims are to help the cultural and creative sectors seize the opportunities of the digital age and globalization and enable sectors to reach their economic potential, contributing to sustainable growth, jobs, and social cohesion. It also gives Europe's culture and media sectors access to new international opportunities, markets, and audiences.

After the implementation of the agreement by the parliament, starting from 2016, Ukrainian artists and institutions will have access to schemes financed by the program.
