UK to train 2,000 Ukrainian troops – Fallon

The UK will increase the number of Ukrainian soldiers who will undergo British training courses, UK Secretary of Defense Michael Fallon has said.

As Fallon said during the joint briefing with his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak in Kyiv on Tuesday, UK decided to train more number of Ukrainian servicemen up to 2,000 and finish their training until the end of the financial year in the UK, September 31.

According to the minister, four directions of training of the military specialists are planned, particularly for an efficient work on demining, conducting operations in residential areas, operational planning courses and engineering provision courses.

In turn, Poltorak noted that the decision over four programs had already been made, another three would be considered in prospect. The programs are supposed "to teach our soldiers."

Ukrainian defense minster noted that it's expedient to increase the numbers of UK servicemen within the programs. "It's different to teach 1,000 people and 2,000. But we didn't discuss the issue of Brutish troops' numbers today," he added.

Poltorak also covered the issue of providing lethal weapons to Ukraine. "We're ready to accept help in all directions. If the UK has an opportunity to give help in a form of the lethal weapons – we need them – we would be very happy. But we understand all complications connected to it. Therefore, we're working on it, and I hope that our cooperation with UK Defense Ministry will first of all give us the opportunity to train our soldiers," he said.
