Yuzhny port handles vessel with 80,000 tonnes of South African coal – Deputy PM Voschevsky

A vessel with 80,000 tonnes of coal from South Africa is being unloaded at Yuzhny port, Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Voschevsky said at a roundtable meeting in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"The first vessel with 80,000 tonnes of coal from South African whose price is $65 per tonne is now being unloaded at Yuzhny port. More shipments will arrive," he said.

He did not elaborate on which contract and which customer the coal is related to.

Voschevsky also pointed out the need for importing coal for PJSC Centrenergo.

Head of the Independent Trade Union of Coal Miners Mykhailo Volynets, who was present at the meeting, said that a tender took place on July 1 to select the supplier of coal to Ukraine. Suppliers from Poland, South Africa, Russia, and Australia participated in the tender.

The Ukrainian coal producers' bid price was UAH 1,116 per tonne, the Polish suppliers' bid was UAH 1,300 per tonne, the bid of those from South Africa was set at UAH 1,698 per tonne, from Russia at UAH 1,835, and Australia at UAH 1,865.

The official forex rate set for August 4 is UAH 21.717484 per U.S. dollar.
