OSCE urges Ukrainian authorities to investigate in depth incident with reporter Chornovol
The current situation regarding the safety of reporters in Ukraine causes concern following the attack on Tetiana Chornovol, Representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic said.
"Attacks on journalists cannot be tolerated, there must be no impunity for the perpetrators. I welcome the fact that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych condemned this attack and called on the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice," Mijatovic was quoted as saying in a statement posted on the OSCE website on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian authorities should make every effort to improve the situation with the safety of mass media representatives, "which has unfortunately deteriorated in recent weeks," the statement said.
It has been reported that reporter Chornovol was beaten in the Kyiv region overnight into Wednesday.
