New agreements between Ukraine and Russia contradict aspirations of protesters - White House

The White House thinks that the agreements reached between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia do not meet the aspirations and demands of protesters in the center of Kyiv.

"Any agreements concluded between Kyiv and Moscow will not address the concerns of those who have gathered in public protest across Ukraine," White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

He said that the White House would continue to study the details of these agreements.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would invest $15 billion from the National Welfare Fund (NWF) in Ukrainian government securities.

"Given the difficulties facing the Ukrainian economy, connected to a significant degree with the global financial and economic crisis, with the goal of supporting the budget of the Ukrainian government, Russia has made the decision to place a portion of reserves in the National Welfare Fund in Ukrainian government securities in an amount totaling $15 billion," Putin said following Russian-Ukrainian consultations

In addition, Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy signed an addendum to the contract concerning the purchase of Russian gas, its delivery, amount, and transit terms of January 19, 2009. Putin said that the document allows Gazprom to sell gas to Ukraine at a price of $268.50 per 1,000 cubic meters. Right now this price is about $400.
