Authorities want elections of Kyiv mayor to be held in 2013, deputies to Kyiv council – in 2015, opposition suspects

The opposition suspects that the authorities want to hold the elections of Kyiv mayor in summer 2013, and the elections of deputies of Kyiv council – in 2015.

"The authorities are discussing the option of holding the elections of Kyiv mayor in 2013, and the postponement of the elections to the Kyiv Council until 2015," the chairman of the committee on freedom of speech and information and Batkivschyna MP Mykola Tomenko told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, "this will allow a partial solution to the problem" of the elections in Kyiv.

"Meanwhile the authorities will have the opportunity to control the situation in Kyiv in future, since there is a president's representative, the head of Kyiv city state administration, with serious powers," Tomenko said.

The MP added that in this situation Kyiv mayor, even if he is from opposition, "will have no chance to influence the situation."

"The opposition knows about this so-called compromise scenario, and won't support voting for holding elections of only the city head, without elections to Kyiv council. It contradicts the constitution, laws, and common sense," he said.

As reported, on April 2 Verkhovna Rada voted for scheduling of the elections of Kyiv mayor and deputies of Kyiv City Council on June 2, 2013.
