Ukraine eager to find cooperation formula with Customs Union, probably with observer status, says Yanukovych

Ukraine could get observer status in the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, or find a mode for cooperation with the union considering relations between Ukraine and the Customs Union member states, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"I think we have a chance to become an observer, and find a form [of cooperation] that could comply with the level of our relations in the course of time," he said at a Friday press conference at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv.

The head of state stressed that Ukraine was very interested in economic integration with the Customs Union.

He added that in 2012 trade between Ukraine and the union's member states was estimated at $63 billion, while its trade with the EU was estimated at around $50 billion, including services.

"That's why much will depend on the will of our partners' – Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus – to see Ukraine at the same table," Yanukovych said.

He said Ukraine is also interested in the absence of the Customs Union's discriminating measures against domestic manufacturers.

"These are our strategic partners," the president said and added that negotiations on the issue continue.

Yanukovych also expressed hope that both sides are eager to cooperate.

"I will visit Russia again soon and we will continue negotiating over the issue," he said.

Yanukovych also said that today there are around 140 documents adopted in the Customs Union during recent eight years. At the same time, he said that the union's normative basis has not been formed in its final shape.

"That's why if we get some status [in the Customs Union] and participate in consideration of issues related to relations between Ukraine and the Customs Union, we could benefit from this. It is our obligations," he said.

He added that this meets Ukraine's national and economic interests "and we have no right to lose anything."

"We are not so cool and rich, as they say, to neglect this cooperation," Yanukovych said.
