Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko is following in the Mena Penal Colony the recommendations of doctors from Oberig Clinic, where he recently underwent surgery, Ukrainian Ombudsperson Valeria Lutkovska has said.

"Today [on January 31] I was in the Mena colony... Yuriy Lutsenko is to continue to follow the recommendations of doctors from Oberig Clinic. I wanted to see how this works in practice," she said on Channel 5 late on Thursday.

"I saw everything that I wanted to see. He gets all of the medicines prescribed in accordance with the scheme drafted by the hospital's doctors," she said.

At the same time, Lutkovska complained that the State Penitentiary Service had not reported on the transfer of the ex-minister to prison after the surgery until this event had drawn a wide response.

"The State Penitentiary Service, before taking any actions that may cause a public outcry, should have gathered representatives of the media and talk about the surgery was performed on January 23, which required certain treatment that has been completed," she said.

She also said that the procedures that required infusions or injections had been completed and that the ex-minister was currently undergoing treatment that can be performed in prison, by taking pills.

As reported, the convicted former interior minister, Lutsenko, who underwent surgery in the Oberig private clinic in Kyiv, was transferred back to Mena penal colony in Kyiv region on Wednesday, on the morning of January 30.

The ex-minister's wife and defense lawyer, Iryna Lutsenko, stated that such actions of the penitentiary service were an attempt on Lutsenko's life. In turn, the oppositional political forces of Ukraine said that the ex-minister's rights were roughly violated and vowed to inform foreign ambassadors and international organizations about the situation.

The EU also expressed concern about the situation with Lutsenko and urged the Ukrainian authorities to undertake responsibility for the ex-minister's health.

Lutsenko has been serving a sentence in Mena colony, Chernihiv region, for several crimes involving the abuse of office, since the end of August 2012.
