Europe ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees – NATO Secretary General

Europe is ready and wants to lead the provision of security guarantees to Ukraine and the commitments are clear, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said following an informal meeting of European leaders in Paris in a message on Platform X.

"Ready and willing. That’s my take from today’s meeting in Paris. Europe is ready and willing to step up. To lead in providing security guarantees for Ukraine. Ready and willing to invest a lot more in our security. The details will need to be decided but the commitment is clear," Rutte wrote.

According to another participant in the meeting, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, "not only Ukraine, but also Europe must take on its responsibility once a truce is reached between Ukraine and Russia."

"I discussed this with several of my European counterparts at an informal meeting convened by president Emmanuel Macron in Paris today. Everyone feels the great sense of urgency. At this crucial time for the security of Europe we must continue to stand behind Ukraine. That is in the interest of the Netherlands too. Europe will have to make a contribution towards safeguarding any agreement, and cooperation with the Americans is essential," Schoof wrote on X Platform.

As reported, the leaders of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Great Britain, as well as the heads of the EU and NATO, gathered in Paris on Monday evening. The emergency consultations were organized by Emmanuel Macron against the backdrop of US initiatives to organize talks on ending the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine without the participation of EU representatives. No specific decisions were announced following the meeting.
