WHO records 1,940 attacks on Ukraine’s medical system since war start
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded 1,940 attacks on Ukraine's medical system since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
According to a WHO press release, 85% of all attacks occur in medical institutions. At the same time, a significant number of them are carried out using heavy weapons.
WHO also notes that since December 2023, attacks on the country's healthcare system have intensified and occur almost daily.
In addition, it is reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, an average of 200 ambulances have been damaged or destroyed annually during shelling.
This year, many more health-care workers have also been injured than before. According to WHO data, first responders and health transportation are three times more likely to suffer harm from attacks compared to other health-care personnel,” Dr Jarno Habicht, WHO Representative in Ukraine, is quoted as saying in a press release.
In addition, WHO reports that since the beginning of 2024, 34 health workers have died due to attacks by the aggressor, while 24 have been injured throughout 2023, 229 health workers, which is a total more than in 2022 and 2023.
