Ukraine's first firefighting robot approved for use by Armed Forces
Ukraine's Ministry of Defense has codified and approved the deployment of an engineering ground-based robotic firefighting complex in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The robotic firefighting complex is a mobile tracked platform equipped with special equipment to deliver water under pressure or foam to extinguish flames. Using a remote control, the operator can direct the robot to the fire's epicenter from a safe distance. The flow of liquid to the fire source can be regulated remotely.
Initially developed for emergency and rescue services, the robot has now attracted the interest of the military.
"The firefighting robot operates at a distance of up to 2 km from the operator in open terrain and up to 400 m in rough terrain. The operator receives images from the hazardous area where the fire is being extinguished via a video camera mounted on the platform," the ministry said in the report.
Such a robot is necessary in areas where unexploded ordnance may be present near burning equipment, which poses a risk of detonation, as well as in other potentially dangerous situations involving risk to the lives and health of military personnel.
At the military's request, the robotic platform has been upgraded with a reinforced chassis. The range of control and the autonomous operating time have also been increased.
"Thanks to its tracked chassis, this firefighting robot can navigate difficult terrain, cross burning debris, operate under extreme temperatures, and use its water cannon to create a so-called 'water wall,'" the ministry said.
