Container train launched on regular basis between TIS terminal and Dnipro port

The weekly round trip container train was launched on September 6, 2017 between TIS Container Terminal (Odesa region) and Dnipro River Port.

The press service of TIS reported that the joint project of TIS, Ukrrichflot and Maersк Line started operating in the test mode in May 2017. It has made 14 trips. The train can carry not only Maersк Line containers, but also containers of other lines.

Some 16 km of railway tracks were additionally built to start the train at the TIS container terminal. The head of the terminal and the co-owner of TIS, Yehor Hrebennikov, said that transportation of large volumes of containers by trains is a worldwide trend. For example, the Slovenian port Koper handles 60% of containers by rail. In Ukraine, the volume of containers transported by trains is still small: up to 5% of all containers.

"The rail container platforms have no problem with weight restrictions, so the TIS container train will allow Ukrainian cargo owners to use the full capacity of a container of up to 29 tonnes. They can absolutely legally exceed the maximum permitted weight for Ukrainian roads of 24 tonnes," the press service said.

Loading 15-20% more freight into containers, the owners of the cargo have significant savings on logistics. In addition, it allows not destroying roads by trucks with exceeding the maximum axle load.

The capacity of one container train that runs between TIS and Dnipro is 100 TEU. The train passes distance of 630 km in 19 hours, which is four times faster than the time of ordinary deliveries by rail. It takes less than 24 hours to finish operations for loading and unloading containers from railway platforms, as well as sending and receiving a full-length train in the TIS and Dnipro ports.

In addition, PJSC Ukrzaliznytsia guarantees sticking to the schedule of the new train. Thanks to this, deliveries of loaded and empty containers in the mode of import and export are carried out predictably and regularly. The cost includes delivery to any district of Dnipro City and adjacent areas.

There is also the option of shipping containers to or from other container terminals of Big Odesa. This gives business the possibility of long-term regular planning of export-import supplies.

From May to September 2017, over 2,000 TEU have already been transported via the new container route. According to the organizers of the project, in the near future it is planned to build a similar route to Kyiv, thus creating a railway triangle between Kyiv, Dnipro and Odesa. In addition, the project introducing transportation by the refrigerated container train is almost completed.
