Ukraine is introducing retaliatory duties on import from Russia, bans import of some goods

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk said Ukraine has imposed a ban on the import of some goods from Russia, and has imposed an import duty on Russian goods.

"The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers is now adopting two decrees on counter-sanctions against the illegal actions taken by the Russian Federation. The first decree bans the import into the custom territory of Ukraine of goods originating from Russia, and the second decree is on the import duties on goods originating from Russia. Every action taken by Russia will be followed by a counter-action taken by Ukraine," he said, opening a government meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday.

The prime minister said the decrees will be published on the day the restrictions imposed by Russia will take effect. He emphasized that this decision made by the Ukrainian government is a "mirrored" measure, in response to Russia's actions. "We will do so every time: every Russian action will be followed by a relevant response," Yatseniuk said.

According to earlier reports, Ukraine's Economic Development and Trade Ministry in connection with the measures to be taken by Russia against Ukrainian exports has developed proposals regarding retaliatory sanctions against Russian commodities: import duties on certain Russian goods as of January 2, 2016, and a full ban on certain goods as of January 10.

In particular, the ministry suggests embargoing such foodstuffs from Russia as meat, fish, some dairy foods, processed cheese, coffee, tea, nutritive mixtures, confectioneries and bakery products, baby foods, pasta, sauces, flavor additives and spices, beer, ethyl alcohol, vodka, dog food and filtered cigarettes.

Unlike the Russian list, the list contains potassium chloride, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, sprout inhibitors and phytohormones, rodenticides, artificial sausage casing, equipment for railways or tramways, as well as diesel electric locomotives.
