Acting Culture Minister: FreeDom TV channel to be revised in near future

Acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Rostyslav Karandeyev says that the concept of the Ukrainian Russian-language TV channel FreeDom will be revised in the near future.

"You remember the history of this channel. The goal was to convey to Russians, beyond the traditional information traffic that they have - namely, this Russian television - more objective information. It's not easy. We plan to review the concept of this broadcaster together with our colleagues in the near future and consider more effective and necessary forms of activity today," Karandeyev said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine, answering the question why Ukraine needs the Russian-language FreeDom TV channel.

To clarify exactly what changes are meant, he said that it’s about changing the format and channels of communication.

"The issue of the language of the media product, which is produced by the Multimedia platform of foreign broadcasting in Ukraine, is currently being discussed. The need to develop an English-language product for a Western audience is urgent. For example, Ukrinform is now starting to implement such projects," he added.

When asked if the FreeDom TV channel could cease to fully exist, Karandeyev replied in the negative.
