Lithuanian President: Now we need speed of implementation of decisions taken to help Ukraine, we’re lagging behind Ukrainian soldiers’ needs

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda notes the importance of the speed of implementation of the decisions already taken on military assistance to Ukraine.

“I think there are several channels how we can support Ukraine, and I cannot imagine Ukraine's success without one of them. Of course, military support is a key issue. To succeed on the battlefield, we need to support Ukraine as soon as possible and as much as possible. A lot has been done ... and I think we especially need the speed of implementation right now. Because decisions have been made, but implementation, unfortunately, is too slow, and we are lagging behind the needs of Ukrainian soldiers,” Nauseda said during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday.

The second, as Nauseda stressed, no less important point of support for Ukraine is economic. He noted that Ukrainians “count very much on the ability of my colleagues in the European Council to make this very important decision on February 1, when we will meet again in Brussels to discuss the allocation of EUR 50 billion for macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.”

“I hope that no matter if there are 27 or 26 countries, we will come to an agreement. This will be a very significant support for our Ukrainian friends,” the Lithuanian leader said.

The third channel, as Nauseda pointed out, is political support for Ukraine. In particular, he noted that political decisions are needed to invite Ukraine not only to the European Union, but also to start accession negotiations as soon as possible, and success in the field of integration into NATO is also needed.

The Lithuanian President expressed hope that the Washington NATO summit would be successful.
