Regional cooperation systems to help strengthen security on European continent – Zelenskyy

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that regional security systems can strengthen security on the European continent.

"Regional formats of cooperation give this very practice - the knowledge of being allies in one area or another, at one or another historical distance. It's day-to-day cooperation. These are also our coalitions, defense coalitions that help us stand against Russia," he said, speaking via video link at the Joint Expeditionary Force summit on Friday. It is a multilateral defense cooperation framework led by the United Kingdom and made up of ten countries: the Netherlands, Iceland, the UK, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Estonia.

"The capabilities of large alliances grow on the basis of meaningful local cooperation. Currently, we are working on creating new formats of cooperation and strengthening the existing ones in our region. I have recently visited Bucharest, and at the meeting with President Iohannis we agreed that the relations between our states, Ukraine and Romania, deserve the level of strategic partnership," Zelenskyy said.

According to him, "we all have to remember that joint security and development of the economy and infrastructure in the Black Sea region are some of the keys to the geopolitical stability of our entire Europe."

"New security perspectives will also emerge due to the changes in the South Caucasus. This will add potential to our joint security in our part of Europe. Especially when our defense from Russian aggression opens new prospects for Georgia to restore its territorial integrity," Zelenskyy said.

"We are at a critical juncture. Either terrorist Russia succeeds in breaking freedom and the zone of geopolitical instability in Europe's east will spread across the continent - or, thanks to our cooperation and common protection of freedom, Russia will lose in this confrontation," the president said.

After its loss, he noted, "a historical chance for geopolitical stability along the entire line from Scandinavia through Minsk and Kyiv to the South Caucasus will be realized."

Zelenskyy called "to focus on Russian hybrid terrorist threats. Last year, the Kremlin bet on energy infrastructure strikes to destroy the basis of modern life. We expect that Russia will try to replicate its terror tactics this winter, but only on a larger scale."

"Air defense, namely the defense of our cities, energy infrastructure, and Black Sea export corridors, is key to winning the winter battle for Ukraine," Zelenskyy said.
