USA to transfer confiscated Iranian weapons, ammunition to Ukraine

The United States will transfer thousands of units of confiscated Iranian weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, CNN reports, citing information from officials.

“The USA will transfer thousands of seized Iranian weapons and rounds of ammunition to Ukraine, in a move that could help to alleviate some of the critical shortages facing the Ukrainian military as it awaits more money and equipment from the US and its allies, U.S. officials said,” CNN said Wednesday.

According to the publication, the U.S. Central Command plans to announce assistance this week.

At the same time, the publication notes that it is not yet clear what legal grounds the United States will use to facilitate the transfer of weapons, since the UN requires that the confiscated weapons be destroyed or stored. The Biden administration has been thinking for several months about how to legally send weapons to Ukrainians that are stored at the facilities of the Central Command of the U.S. Armed Forces throughout the Middle East.

In January 2023, the U.S. Central Command, in cooperation with the French armed forces, conducted an operation to seize more than 3,000 assault rifles, 578,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 anti-tank guided missiles that were sent to Yemen from Iran.
