Kuleba calls on EU to intensify work on formulating legal basis for transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for intensifying work on the formulation of a legal framework that would allow the transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine to "make life easier for everyone."

"Today I also emphasized to my colleagues the need to intensify work on formulating a legal framework that will allow the transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine. We know that there are a number of legal issues that must be resolved. But there are no legal issues that cannot be resolved when there is an understanding among lawyers that there is political will for this, and within the rule of law such solutions can be found," Kuleba said at a joint press conference with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, following an informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union in Kyiv.

He also noted that the creation of such a mechanism and the transfer of Russian assets would make life easier for everyone: both Ukraine, which would receive additional resources, and the EU, which would find a clear legal solution to what to do with these funds, as well as ease the financial burden borne by the European side.

"Everyone agrees that the Russian Federation must pay. We just need to find this instrument, and the time for this has come. And this will also make life easier for the Russian Federation, since it will get rid of the unnecessary burden in the form of frozen money," Kuleba said.
