War in Ukraine kills at least 8,101 civilians, 13,479 wounded – UN

Civilian casualties from February 24, 2022, when Russia started the war against Ukraine, to February 26, 2023 amounted to 21,580 civilians (as of February 15, 21,293), including 8,101 killed (8,066), the Office of the High Commissioner of United Nations Human Rights Organization (OHCHR) has said on Monday.

"OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration," the UN said.

This concerns, for example, Mariupol (Donetsk region), Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region), where there are allegations of numerous civilian casualties.

According to confirmed UN figures, 3,584 men, 2,127 women, 256 boys and 201 girls killed, while the gender of 31 children and 1,902 adults has not yet been determined.

Among the 13,479 injured were 398 boys and 293 girls, as well as 271 children whose gender has not yet been determined.

Compared to the data as of February 15, one child killed and eight children were wounded.

If earlier the OHCHR report on the number of casualties was published daily, and then only on weekdays, since July it has become a weekly one. In this summary, as in the previous one, the data are given by months.

According to them, the death toll in February fell to 123 from 198 in January and 205 in December.

March remains the deadliest month for civilians, with a minimum of 3,943 deaths, according to the UN. In April, according to an OHCHR publication, the number of civilian deaths due to the war fell to 758, in May to 509, in June to 422 and in July to 378. In the first five days of the war, from February 24 to February 28, some 358 people died, for August some 332, for September some 386, for October some 305 and for November some 184.

The number of wounded in February was 402, the lowest since the beginning of the war: in January there were 539, in December some 617, in November some 541, for the first five days of the war in February last year some 464. In October, the number of wounded fell to 795 from 976 in September, when it turned out to be higher than in August some 917. Before that, the number of wounded every month exceeded a thousand: July some 1,126, June some 1,104, May some 1,136, April some 1,888, March some 2,974.

According to the report, in February 2023, some 115 people were killed and 377 injured by explosive weapons with a wide area of effect, while mines and explosive remnants of war killed eight and injured 25 people (6% of the total casualties).

Government-controlled territories accounted for 88% of the victims in February, according to the UN.

The summary has traditionally stated that the increase in figures from the previous summary should not be attributed only to cases after February 15, since during this period the Office verified a number of cases from previous days.
