European Council President: We respect German decision-making process on tanks for Ukraine

President of the European Council Charles Michel considers it necessary to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks, but notes this is not an easy decision for Germany.

Michel told reporters there is a request from Ukraine for tanks and he believes that tanks should be provided to Ukraine. According to him, it is also important to respect the fact that this is not an easy decision, as well as to note that Germany is one of the main assistants and one of the main suppliers of military equipment to Ukraine. Michel said the European Council respects the decision-making process within Germany, and does not underestimate the difficulties associated with the decision.

At the same time, he reiterated the EU will continue to support Ukraine, in particular in the military sector.

Michel said that is the reason for him to be in Ukraine. In order to once again express the full support of the EU, as well as listen carefully to the assessment of the authorities, especially Ukraine's assessment of the military situation, specific needs, so that the EU officials try their best to make the proper decisions, he said.

As Michel explained, having personally received more information from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, he will be able to use it to build unity in the EU.

The President of the European Council said these face-to-face meetings are extremely valuable because they give more information about what the situation is on the ground. He also called it an opportunity to have more information, as well as arguments that he can use to build European unity and strengthen support for Ukraine.

According to Michel, the upcoming February 3 Ukraine-EU summit will give a very powerful signal that "we are together" and will outline the next steps and areas of cooperation.
