US Congress releases bill to fund federal government for FY2022, $13.6 bln aid for Ukraine envisaged

Congressional leaders released a bill to fund the federal government for the 2022 fiscal year and send further military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, as well as appropriate money for the continuing pandemic response.

"The $1.5 trillion package, unveiled early Wednesday, would send $13.6 billion to Ukraine, with roughly half of that for humanitarian and economic aid, and the other half for defense in Ukraine as well as in U.S. allies in the Baltics and Central and Eastern Europe," The Wall Street Journal reported.

The package sets U.S. spending levels for defense and nondefense spending for fiscal 2022 and comes after months of negotiations between Democratic and Republican leaders.

"The package would appropriate $730 billion in nondefense funding, a $46 billion increase over the fiscal year 2021 and the largest in four years. The spending package appropriates $782 billion in defense funding—an increase of $42 billion over fiscal-year 2021," The Wall Street Journal said.

The spending package also includes $15.6 billion to combat the pandemic, both in the U.S. and globally. It is intended to prepare for future variants or spikes in cases, by allowing the government to purchase supplies of monoclonal antibodies, oral antivirals and vaccines before shortages arise.
