Canada has made a decision to supply Kyiv with $6.1 million worth of lethal weapons and provide $500 million in financial assistance, taking into account the aggravation of the situation around Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said.

"In light of the seriousness of the situation, and following conversations with our Ukrainian partners, I have approved the provision of $7.8 million [Canadian, $6.1 million] worth of lethal equipment and ammunition," the prime minister told reporters at a press conference.

Trudeau said it is "important for Canadians and the world to know that Canada will continue supporting Ukraine and its independence, integrity, sovereignty, including its right to defend itself."
