Almost 300 reports of polling violations received by 12:00 on Sunday, 3 cases opened – Interior Ministry

By 12.00 on Sunday, March 31, 2019, police had opened three criminal cases connected with violations on the day of voting in the first round of presidential elections, the Interior Ministry has said.

"The situation as of 12.00 – 284 complaints and information [about violations] have been received, three criminal cases have been opened," the communications department of the ministry said.

The Interior Ministry's consultant Ivan Varchenko said during a briefing in Kyiv that most reported violations are connected with misunderstandings of voters about voting legislation or deliberate violations – violating the secrecy of the ballot and violating the prohibition of taking photos or videos.

In this context, Varchenko called on Ukrainians not to violate the law.

Varchenko also said the ministry admits the possibility of protest actions, because at the end of the voting there will be those who are not satisfied with the result.

"We appeal to them to obey the law," the adviser said. .

National Police Spokesman Yaroslav Trakalo said open criminal proceedings concern falsification of electoral documents (Kherson region), violation of voting secrets (Dnipropetrovsk region) and hooliganism (Chernihiv region).

In Ukraine, on Sunday, March 31, the first round of the next presidential elections takes place. Voting will end at 20:00. A record number of 39 candidates are running in this presidential election.
