Compromise for gas price with IMF allows continuing cooperation with financial world

Finding a compromise with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the price of gas for households would allow continuing cooperation of Ukraine with the international financial institutions (IFIs) and settle the issue of the debt burden, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has said.

"The key goal of all negotiations of the Ukrainian government with IFIs, including the IMF, is to reduce the debt burden on the budget and get rid of the grip of the debt, which today costs at least $5 billion a year for Ukraine," the press service of the government reported on Friday, citing Groysman.

The prime minister confirmed that one of the clauses of the negotiations with the IMF is the price of gas for Ukrainian consumers.

"You know that there is a requirement of the partners to equalize the price of industrial gas and gas for households. This is a sensitive issue for Ukrainians and for me. The discussion is heavy. It has been going on since last summer. More than a year we kept the situation under control. Now we will discuss the issue with the IMF mission and seek a compromise to protect the citizens," he said.

The head of government also said that finding such a compromise would give an opportunity to continue Ukraine's cooperation with the financial world, and thus solve the issue of the debt burden.
