Court denies mandatory saliva test for Savchenko

Kyiv's Shevchenkivsky District Court on Wednesday denied a request from military prosecutors to take a saliva sample from imprisoned Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine nonaligned deputy Nadiia Savchenko.

"The investigation judge… did not grant the request," says the decision.

At the start of the hearing evidence included a mobile telephone, on which biological material was found – the reason prosecutors requested the mandatory saliva sample from Savchenko.

Savchenko's lawyer Dmytro Buhai argued the motion should be denied because it would denigrate Savchenko and violate her human rights.

Savchenko, who attended the hearing, said she would regard attempts to extract biological samples from her as acts of torture.
